U.S. Department of State: Private Sector Summit
January 2007 - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says the U.S. government must work with the private sector in order to meet today's challenges throughout the world. During the Private Sector Summit in Washington, D.C., Secretary Rice acknowledged the importance of public relations experts and international business leaders in shaping America's international image. The purpose of the Summit, which was attended by 150 top U.S. public relations professionals and State Department leaders, was to identify steps the private sector can take to support U.S. public diplomacy. Rice also announced the creation of the Private Sector Public Diplomacy Award, which has been named after Benjamin Franklin and recognizes individuals and organizations for their outstanding contributions to America's public diplomacy.
