UNICEF Helping children cope after violence in Gaza
Two weeks after renewed fighting brought chaos and destruction to Jabalia, located on the North end of Gaza, these damaged homes, schools and storefronts remain as powerful reminders to children of the latest episode of violence they had to witness. The humanitarian situation had already been deteriorating since the near total blockade of the Gaza Strip in June 2007. But, the recent military operation worsened conditions, leaving essential services, like water and sanitation, close to breakdown and placing even more strain on the already tight education and medical services. Countless children were affected by the violence. Parents and caregivers soon saw the serious side affects witnessing aggression can have as children began to commonly exhibit depression, anger and hyperactivity, fear of being alone and nightmares.
