UNICEF: Queen Rania of Jordan supports quake relief for children
Her Majesty Queen Rania Al-Abdullah of Jordan visited Pakistan, a country devastated by the
earthquake that has left nearly 4 million people homeless.
Accompanied by UNICEF staff, Queen Rania toured the ruins of a girls' high school in Muzaffarabad.
When the disaster struck, some 80 students lost their lives as they sat in the classroom.
Right next to the rubble, a tent school is now up and running --- an effort supported by UNICEF to bring
children back to school and help them cope with their emotional stress.
Queen Rania had the chance to talk to the children and their parents firsthand --- a chance to hear about
how they survived the quake, and how many loved ones they have lost.
She also witnessed UNICEF's work to immunize some 120,000 children against preventable diseases
such as polio, measles and tetanus.
At the end of her visit, Queen Rania pledged to raise more funds to support UNICEF's work.
With winter fast approaching, 10,000 children could die if food, shelter, and medical care don't reach
them in time.
