U.S. Department of State: War on Drugs
While the Mexican government has cracked down on the country's top drug traffickers, Afghanistan is currently producing more opium poppy than ever before. Those nations are among the many countries the U.S. State Department evaluated in its International Narcotics Strategy Report. The annual report to Congress describes the efforts key countries implemented throughout 2006 to eliminate the drug trade. Based on the report, Assistant Secretary of State for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs Anne Patterson says Afghanistan increased its opium poppy cultivation by 59 percent, making last year's crop the largest on record. Patterson also briefed officials on other key statistics including Bolivia's eradication of 5,000 hectors of coca ' resulting in the country's lowest coca production in 10 years despite a perceived increase in the region's production.
