Stena Bulk AB: Shortage of Merchant Seamen
Despite the fact that 200 ships officers are trained every year in Sweden, more than double that number is needed to satisfy the demand, according to the Swedish merchant navy. In fact, Stena Bulk, the oil tanker company, says that the shortage of seamen is a global problem. The company says that 40,000 officers are needed globally. To tackle the problem, the Swedish merchant navy is focusing on younger generation of seamen, providing them with onboard professional training and long-term career planning, as well as improving living conditions onboard including access to the Internet, TV and telephone to make them feel closer to families and friends when at sea.
