Beauty shots of seals, archive footage 2
Less than one day into Canada’s annual seal hunt, animal rights activists claim sealers are already breaking new laws implemented this year. As part of efforts to show the hunt is humane, the Canadian government instituted new licensing conditions requiring sealers to bleed out the animals before moving them. However, researchers from the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), a group monitoring the hunt, claim they saw four seals being killed and not one was bled out. IFAW reports the Canadian seal hunt is the largest of its kind involving a marine mammal. This year, Canada has approved a total allowable catch of 275,000 seals – including pups.
