Back to school in Iraq
Summer is over and girls at the Al Ghadeer Primary school are back at school. They begin the academic year by
singing the national anthem.
The headmistress welcomes her more than 500 students and encourages them to think of going to school as an act
of defiance to violence and war.
It’s a lesson that they scarcely need reminding of. Last year was one of the worst of these girls young lives-lessons
were often disrupted by violence, utilities failed, classrooms fell into disrepair, and many teachers-and
students-were forced to leave.
But this year is different. Students were delighted to find new facilities in their previously rundown school. Thanks to a
UNICEF-sponsored programme to rebuild essential services, Al Ghadeer now has running water, new desks, and
school equipment.
