The Greenpeace ship Esperanza is heading for the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary in the Antarctic, where it will attempt to disrupt Japan's annual whale hunt. Its whaling program, Greenpeace officials say, kills more than 900 minke whales and 10 fin whales each year under the guise of scientific research. Greenpeace claims that Japan hunts the whales for commercial reasons, but the organization says the consumption of whale meat in Japan is declining, and thus it believes there is no need to kill the whales. The Greenpeace Fund promotes Greenpeace's mission through public education, grassroots lobbying and grants to other environmental organizations. Greenpeace's mission is to halt environmental destruction and to promote solutions for future generations. One of Greenpeace's unique strengths is our capacity to conduct international campaigns in countries around the world, giving us the ability to challenge environmental threats and promote change on issues that transcend national borders and require international cooperation. Our strategies include a unique combination of advocacy, lobbying, research and education and complex negotiations with corporations and in international forums. Greenpeace is committed to defending the world's oceans and the life that depends on them by ending whaling and destructive fishing practices, and working for global marine reserves.
