His message of wildfire prevention is the center of one of the most succesful PSA campaigns in our nation's history. Smokey's message of "Only you can prevent forest fires" was changed to "Only you can prevent wildfires" in May 2001 in response to the massive outbreak of wildfires around the U.S. The term wildfire applies to any uncontrolled outdoor fire.
