UNICEF: Temporary classrooms get earthquake-affected students back to school
One of the most evident disasters of the earthquake that shattered Southern Peru last August was the destruction of over six hundred of the region's schools. Life after the earth quake has been difficult for many children and adults who lost their homes and possessions... a situation compounded by the fact that children's school activities were completely paralyzed. One of UNICEF's main objectives is helping children and adolescents get back to school immediately, through temporary classrooms and emergency curriculums. The temporary spaces are quick to install and offer children safe spaces to return to their studies. UNICEF has so far installed 304 of them for 34,000 students. Many teachers relied on the UNICEF materials, which also have guidelines on how to begin classes following a trauma like the one caused by this earthquake. At the beginning, parents and children feared another earthquake. And while some families sent their children to these classrooms, other children were deeply affected; feeling depressed because of their losses and anguished at the possibility of yet another such misfortune.
