AARP: Telephone Tax Refunds
Phone bills can mean higher tax returns for some Americans this year. When filing their 2006 federal tax returns, U.S. taxpayers can claim a one time only telephone tax excise refund. Individuals who paid long-distance taxes from February 2003 to August 2006 on a landline phone, mobile phone or Internet-based phone service known as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) are eligible for this one time refund. Taxpayers have a choice: a standard refund amount between $30 and $60, based on the total number of exemptions claimed on their 2006 tax return, to eliminate the need to locate old phone bills; or they can locate those bills and use the actual amount.
