AARP: Safely disposing expired prescriptions
An estimated 80 percent of streams throughout America showed positive traces of chemicals commonly found in prescription drugs, according to a U.S. Geological survey. Health experts say this is because many individuals often toss their unused drugs down the toilet, thus damaging U.S. waterways. Rather than flushing away old prescriptions, various agencies like the AARP recommend patients toss them in the trash in a non-descript bag. To ensure no one will use these drugs after they have been discarded, individuals should add a little water to the pills or flour or coffee grinds to liquid substances. Names on bottles should also be blacked out.
