A rural health care center plays key role in reducing infant and child mortality
21-year-old Bintou Sabaly has given birth to three healthy children in her remote Senegalese village of Mounting
Hamady.
Nobody here has running water or electricity. Most people survive by growing crops and raising a few animals. Bintou
says the biggest development in recent memory was the creation of a health center, which serves 10,000 people in
35 surrounding villages. Bintou is fortunate to live in a country that is showing a strong commitment to improving child survival, in part by
focusing on nutrition. Senegal's national nutrition coordinator, Biram Ndiaye, says that by using nutrition as an entry
point to providing other services, Senegal has achieved the lowest malnutrition prevalence in West Africa.
