UNICEF: Health and Social Services Model Helps
Weeks old and already at risk. Born to mothers living with HIV … these are the youngest faces of Russia’s AIDS
epidemic. But in this paediatric ward in Chelyabinsk - their needs are well anticipated.
SB (Russian) Irina Kastyan, Director Paeditric Ward No 8: Here we can begin therapy in a timely fashion, before
clinical evidence of infection. This means the child does not get terribly sick and doesn’t look any different from any
other child.
Disciplined mother-to-child transmission preventative measures ensure that nearly all of these babies will stay HIV
negative … but many are still vulnerable to other diseases – as well as to social stigma and family neglect.
An industrial city located on an active drug-trade route, Chelyabinsk has one of the highest rates of HIV infection in
the nation. City officials have embraced many initiatives to help lower it.
