Segun una encuesta reciente de AARP, los estadounidenses mayores de 45 años desconocen los costos reales de los servicios de cuidado a largo plazo. La encuesta tambien revelo que los hispanos estan menos informados que el resto de la poblacion sobre los valores de tales servicios. Tres de cada 10 consideraron poder afrontar los costos, calculando el valor del servicio en unos tres mil dolares mensuales. Sin embargo el costo real de los cuidados a largo plazo se estima entre los cinco mil y siete mil dolares mensuales. Para AARP estos datos son de particular importancia, ya que nueve millones de personas mayores de 65 años necesitaron cuidado a largo plazo en 2006 y se espera que llegue a 12 millones para el 2020.
