UNICEF Enterprising women’s association works to support families and community
hese women in Burkina Faso are doing more than collecting trash – they're reclaiming their independence. They
are part of an association of women, many of whom were left by their husbands for younger wives, or women whose
husbands died and left them without the means to provide for themselves and their children. The women's
association owns the carts and makes its money going house to house. The association was started by Kabore
Ouedraogo after her husband died. In addition to collecting trash, the women
make soap. They use local materials and boil the soap in huge vats heated over a wood-fuled fire. They make other
cosmetics, as well. The money they earn, along with the money from collecting trash, pays for school fees for their
children, as well as local children who've been orphaned. Two years ago, UNICEF provided start-up funds, and now
offers technical assistance and counseling. The UNICEF representative in Burkina Faso has been amazed with the
results. "Through those investments, there is really an improvement of the living conditions of the family.
