Activision: ESRB ratings
The majority of parents (56 percent) say the Entertainment Software Rating Board's (ESRB) review is the most influential tool in buying video games for their children, according to Activision. The ratings, which are located on the game's packaging, indicate age appropriateness and include content descriptors with a range of over 30 different potential elements that may have triggered a particular rating and/or may be of interest or concern, such as violence, sex, humor or language. ESRB recommends that parents learn about games before making a purchasing decision. Game reviews printed in newspapers and publisher web sites can be excellent sources of information. The survey also indicates 74 percent of parents feel that video games are part of their family's life and provide an opportunity to spend time with their children.
